As the girl recites these lines from a children book, she thinks of the fact that more than half of the human body is water. And if all water goes back to the great cycle, so would the water inside her. From the bones (22% water), blood (50% water), skin (72% water), heart (78% water) and mostly tears (98% water)*.
She imagines all the tears she has shed in her lifetimeโโโduring a shower, at a theatre, on sleepless nights, in a dreamโโโwhere are they now? Say, if they vaporised, could they have been breathed in by someone in the same room? If they were washed into a drain, would they have reached the sea by now? If they were reabsorbed by the skin, would they later be secreted in the same way?
โLife can be hard, tears softens it.โ She thinks.
She also recalls a drizzly spring day, she and her Labrador walking down the High Street. Rain, like powder, drifted slightly when they fell. Had any one of them once been part of someoneโs tears? Or even her own tear, though she would not have the ability to recognise it. Unless it came to her with a whisper, โHere I am, from that moment in time. Remember then, when I held onto your lashes before I came dripping down.โ๐ง
