There on a pavement some grains of grayish turquoise caught my eyes. If water droplets would create dark patches on a pavement, these stood out like bright specks against the asphalt canvas. Looking closely, they were actually jigsaw puzzle.
The puzzle pieces spreaded a good distance on the floor, making it even more curious. Unlike street graffitis, this seemed accidental. Or was it? My mind started to imagine some possible plots. A natural guess would be someone bought a box of puzzle from a charity shop, lost balance somehow and spilled all the pieces. A dramatic guess would be someone felt so discouraged by the game that impulsively poured them straight out the window.
A discarded puzzle meant its purpose had been given up. The picture to be revealed at the end of the game was forever hidden and lost. Enough of metaphors. I found myself imagining them as shedded parts of a natural species, as each one’s profile followed a geometrical principle but still visibly unique. I thought to myself, if only they started to take on this new identity, that allows them to enter stages of decomposition like any living things, then they would be something more than just litter. 🧩
